After being killed by a bear, Emily Alford was reborn back to the day before her entire family was to be exiled to North America. Her father had offended the powerful by refusing to sell the oak forest cheaply, and the entire family was stripped of their title and property, exiled to the New Continent by the Great Lakes to fend for themselves.
The path of exile was long and cruel. Her sister-in-law, pregnant, was on the brink of death. Her mother wiped her face with tears, and her father had only dignity but no survival skills in the wilderness. Only Emily remained unusually calm—her memories from her past life were filled with all the skills her hunter grandfather had taught her. She chipped ice to catch fish, set traps to catch rabbits, and built fire pits to keep warm, gradually pulling her family back from the brink of death. At the exile camp by the Great Lakes, the administrators deliberately assigned them a dilapidated house and skimmed their rations, hoping they would not survive the first winter. Emily said nothing unnecessary and led her brother into the mountains.
The siblings hunted, foraged, cured meat, and stored food, slowly sustaining their lives. She became a mentor-like friend to the local elder hunter, and her precise archery skills earned the admiration of everyone. A fierce wild boar fell into her trap, and she shared half of the meat with other exiled villagers who were likewise outcasts. She ignited the first spark of hope in the icy, snowy land—these people, abandoned by the old world, sat together for the first time, drinking hot soup, feeling that survival might not be an impossibility.
But Emily knew that the real danger had not yet come. If her enemies in London learned that they were still alive, they would certainly send people to wipe them out. Meanwhile, on this land, there were enslaved blacks chained in iron and indigenous people driven from their homes.
Above the wilderness, a community without titles, slaves, or conquest rose from the ground in equality.
